South Carolina holding its tax-free weekend as school shopping continues
TEGA CAY, S.C. (WBTV) – From backpacks and pencils, to new sneakers and computers, back to school shopping is on the to-do list for many families in the next few weeks.
This weekend, South Carolina is holding its tax-free weekend. From Friday-Sunday, consumers will not have to pay that state’s six-percent sales tax on many items.
Things like school supplies, computers, clothing, shoes and bed and bath items will all be tax-free purchases. Items like cameras, cell phones and makeup are not exempt from sales tax.
Shoppers who want to avoid the crowds can still get in on the savings by shopping online.
According to the Department of Revenue, South Carolinians spent more than $30 million during tax-free weekend in 2023.
“I think tax free weekend is great for moms that are on a budget, or even have multiple kids,” one mother said. “Even if you aren’t on a budget, it’s free, it’s like actual money you will save. It’s a no brainer. I will definitely be doing the rest of my shopping this weekend.”
