Former Georgia soccer standout Croix Bethune makes Olympic debut

Georgia soccer alumnus Croix Bethune made her Olympic debut in the 80th minute of the third match in the group stages for the United States. She replaced tournament leading goal soccer Mallory Swanson. The U.S. went on to defeat Australia 2-1, advancing to the quarterfinals of the knockout rounds.

Bethune worked hard to become one of the four alternates on Emma Hayes’ roster. She received her first cap in a U.S. jersey July 13 in its sendoff match against Mexico. With an injury to Jaedyn Shaw, she was added to the main roster, making her eligible to play in any Olympic match.

With a breakout first half of her first professional season in the NWSL, Bethune played a key role in Washington Spirit’s success so far this season. She was the third overall pick of the 2024 NWSL draft. So far, Bethune started in all 11 matches for the Spirit and scored five goals with eight assists.

She began her collegiate career at the University of Southern California. While playing for the Trojans, Bethune was named to the PAC-12 All American team three years in a row and PAC-12 Midfielder of the year two years in row. She left USC ranked seventh in program history for points, goals and assists.

Bethune transferred to Georgia after graduating from USC in 2023. She played one season with the Bulldogs and was a crucial part in winning the first SEC Championship in program history. Bethune became the SEC Tournament MVP and a member of the SEC All-Tournament team.

The United States will face Japan on Aug. 3 with elimination and gold medal contention on the line.
