The Costume Council of the Chicago History Museum will celebrate 50 years of Chicago fashion at its Golden Jubilee on Friday, October 18. The historic evening will include an exclusive preview of Dressed in History: A Costume Collection Retrospective, an exhibition that will be a survey of the museum’s entire costume collection, showcasing not only designer eveningwear, but also men’s and children’s garments, accessories and more.
Featuring 70 rarely seen objects, from glamorous gowns and sharp suits to house-dresses and sneakers, this exhibition will explore how clothing captures the material, social and changing cultural values throughout history. The exhibition will celebrate this collection and the donors, curators and staff who have shaped it.
The Chicago History Museum’s renowned historical fashion collection includes work by distinguished designers such as Charles Frederick Worth, Gabrielle Chanel, Mainbocher, Charles James, Christian Dior, Norman Norell, Geoffrey Beene, Pauline Trigère, Yves Saint Laurent, Hanae Mori, Halston, Gianni Versace, and Christian Lacroix. The collection also represents the rise of Chicago and the dressmakers, milliners, retailers, and manufacturers who made this city their home. Clothing worn by former presidents and first ladies, sports stars, celebrities and everyday people, each exceptional piece is a reflection of Chicago and fashion history.
