Burning Body Parts in a Shopping Cart Led Police to an NYC Apartment Where More Human Remains Were Found

Police in New York City are investigating after several body parts were found in an apartment on August 6, which are reportedly connected to burning body parts found in a shopping cart outside of the city.

Early in the morning on Monday, Aug. 5, police responded to a fire under a bridge along the border with Mt. Vernon, N.Y., Yonkers Police Department said in a statement.

Once police extinguished the flames, officers from the Westchester County Department of Public Safety Police discovered a “lifeless body,” per the statement.

Yonkers police determined the body, which had been found in a shopping cart on the sidewalk, was likely set on fire at the location where it was found, per the statement.

Through their investigation, authorities realized that the “appropriate” branch to handle the investigation would be the New York Police Department as the location where the body was found was merely the “dump site.”

Authorities believe the killing took place in a separate location — specifically a home in New York City’s Bronx borough, they said, per NBC New York and ABC 7 NY.

Investigators suspect that the victim — who has not yet been publicly identified — was allegedly killed in the Bronx apartment before the body was stuffed into a shopping cart, which the unidentified suspects then allegedly transported to Yonkers on the train, per ABC 7 NY.

The body was missing its hands, feet and teeth, authorities said, per the outlet, which states that the dismembering of these body parts slowed the identification process.

On Monday evening, the NYPD conducted a search warrant in a residence in the Bronx and discovered more human remains in the kitchen, the department told PEOPLE in a statement.

It wasn’t immediately clear what specifically led authorities to the Bronx. NYPD did not respond to PEOPLE’s requests to confirm it was linked to the body found in Yonkers.

Police have not made any arrests in connection, and the investigation is ongoing.
