Meet the Racer: Sport compact driver Tombo Waselesky

ESCANABA — With only two regular season race nights left in the 2024 season, action at the Escanaba Speedway is reaching peak intensity.

But before the next race which kicks off the 2024 U.P. State Fair, it’s time to get to know a racer a little better.

This week, Daily Press sports writer Adam Hinch got a chance to sit down with sport compact driver Tombo Waselesky. Waselesky has five feature wins on the season, including a four-race winning streak to start the season. Waselesky is also leading in points at Escanaba Speedway as he has a 21 point lead on Mark Isley.

Adam Hinch: What got you into racing?

Tombo Waselesky: My dad raced here in Escanaba when I was a kid and when I grew up and after 10 years in the navy my dad still had a couple cars and we started working on them and raced together for a few years and now I’m here.

AH: What do you like to do outside of racing?

TW: I like to craft and do craft shows and for a living I install garage door openers.

AH: What is your favorite football team?

TW: The Detroit Lions.

AH: Who’s your favorite Detroit Lions player?

TW: Recently, I’d have to say Matthew Stafford, but all time would have to be Barry Sanders

AH: Are you a NASCAR fan?

TW: I used to be a big Tony Stewart fan.

AH: Fish fry or burgers and brats?

TW: I love a good fish fry but it’s all about the tarter sauce that can make or break it.

AH: You do any hunting?

TW: I’m not a hunter.

AH: Where would you like to go on vacation?

TW: Well I have seen the world being in the Navy but I would have to say Hawai’i.
