Walmart becomes one-stop shop for school shopping

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – Walmart showcases its available supplies and services as families get ready for the new school year.

At 10:30 a.m. August 7, Walmart Supercenter at 7219 Walton Street in Rockford hosted a Back-to-School Open House.

This year, Walmart has over 1000 back-to-school essentials under $10. Walmart manager, Amanda Coudron says that their goal is to be a one-stop shop where families can get their clothes, food, school supplies, eye exams and vaccines before school starts.

“The biggest thing is, we want to make sure that they don’t have to stress – That they don’t have to make those decisions on: are they gonna buy school supplies this year or are they still gonna be able to put meals on the table for this year,” Coudron says. “We definitely always want to make sure that we are helping the community around us, so we had the opportunity to find a school in our community that we thought we could help.”

Walmart chose Thurgood Marshall Middle School to donate supplies to.

Jessica Powell, Principal of the Gifted Academy at Thurgood Marshall Middle School says, “Just knowing that you can walk in on the first day and worry about where you’re going and not what you have to take with you is going to be a real stress reliever for students. They have enough to worry about at middle school level socially without thinking about what they need to take with them to classrooms during the day.”

The school is purchasing all of the consumable and non-consumable supplies for students for a $20 fee, rather than a supply list to ensure that all students have what they need for the entire year.
