Avoid tech shopping scams

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – School is right around the proverbial corner, and scammers know it.

Technology is an important part of a child’s education experience, but you need to be on the lookout for scammers.

The Wisconsin Better Business Bureau wants you to watch for scammers targeting you with enticing ads, attractive but fake websites and phony deals.

Laptops, tablets, and other tech accessories can be a significant investment.

The BBB says this is what you need to be mindful of when you’re back-to-school shopping and trying to save money:

• Shop with businesses you know and trust to make sure you get a quality product and good customer service
• Don’t buy from impostors. Fraudsters may use the name, logo, and other characteristics of brands you trust.
• Closely examine the website to verify they are who they claim they are.
• Approach low prices with caution — low prices and short-term sales could signal you’ve encountered a scam.
• If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is.
• Some manufacturers rarely offer sales.
• Do more research if a company that rarely discounts products offers a huge sale.
• Low-priced products may be used or refurbished or you might be on a fake website.
• Some big-box retailers allow third-party sellers to list items on their websites, and those items can be hard to distinguish from the rest.

Know what you’re shopping for. Researching the best product for your needs will help you avoid scams and buyer’s remorse.
