Number of women-owned businesses is on the rise

HEYBURN, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — From 2019-2023 the growth rate of women-owned businesses was 94% greater than businesses owned by men.

Starting or owning a small business is a great way to combine a passion with making money, and the number of women entrepreneurs starting their own businesses has exploded in recent years, but why?

“From what I’ve seen there’s a lot of reasons why women get into business. Maybe they’re just simply built for it, and they want to do it, so they just go for it. It could be restructuring at their job, or layoffs, which is unfortunate, but could be a blessing in disguise because it could allow them to pursue their passion and have more flexibility over their careers and their income,” said Jacob Montano, a Community Banking Relationship Manager with Zions Bank.

Nikki Beck, the owner of a local business in Heyburn known as Lucky Lake 208, is one of the women who was built for this. And like all business owners, it began with a vision of success.

“We kept driving by this place and I said hey Hun I think I have this vision here, I’m super excited. And here we are today 16 months later, and we have an RV location, we’re having cabins come on to the property, as well as a convenience store and laundromat, and the whole vision is finally coming together it’s so exciting,” said Beck.

Beck was born and raised in the Mini-Cassia area, so starting a business at home meant a lot to her, and while Lucky Lake 208 has not even been open a full year (August 2023) she is more than grateful for how it has gone so far.

“I’ve always wanted to be right here where I’m at right now, this is so exciting. We have some other businesses and stuff, and putting a business together and having it succeed is a great feeling,” Beck said.

“But you can only do that when you have other people helping you. Your banker, your accountant, your public. The public customers are absolutely the number one people that can come and help you.”

Lucky Lake 208 also highlights some other small and women-owned businesses in the Mini-Cassia area by selling their products and placing them right in the front of the convenience store for all to see, because small businesses grow when they stick together.
