100+ roads, bridges closed in St. Lawrence County

ST. LAWRENCE COUNTY, New York (WWNY) – More than 100 roads and bridges across the county were damaged in Friday’s storm.

That’s according to county Emergency Services Director Matt Denner.

The remnants of Hurricane Debby dropped torrential rain on the region, causing flash flooding.

The county’s website has a list of more than 50 roads and bridges that are closed as of early Saturday afternoon. Denner said those are just the major roads and that many more town roads are shut down due to damage.

Denner said the damage is being assessed and highway crews are working to get roads open to traffic.

One road that was destroyed by the flash flooding was Windmill Road in South Colton.

Photos taken by Thomas Wright show the road was washed away by rushing water.

The town of Colton has declared a state of emergency.

Meanwhile, the travel ban in the county has been changed to a travel advisory.

Denner said some minor injuries were reported during the storm, mostly from car crashes related to the weather.

Denner also said the Raquette and Grass rivers were at record highs and are now receding.

There were reports of water rescues.
