N.Va. jobs growth in positive territory, but lagging state total

Local region gained about 28,600 jobs from June 2023 to June 2024, according to new data

Northern Virginia’s employment total gained 1.8 percent year-over-year in June, but slightly lagged the statewide increase.

The local region’s total jobs count stood at 1,606,600 for the month, up from 1,578,000 in June 2023, according to figures reported by the Virginia Employment Commission.

That compares to a statewide increase of 86,800 (+2.1%) to 4,260,900 during the same period.

All 10 metro areas in the commonwealth showed increases, with the rate of growth ranging from 0.6 percent in Staunton to 4.3 percent in both Blacksburg/Christiansburg and Charlottesville.

In raw numbers, Hampton Roads was second to Northern Virginia, picking up up 17,000 jobs, with Richmond third, increasing by 12,300.
