MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 15
Oakland Athletics vs. New York Mets
First Pitch – 1:10 pm EST
Citi Field – Queens, New York
Broadcast – MLBN
In the top of the inning, Jose Quintana will look to get our NRFI started right against the Athletics. That’s not too big of an ask for him given the state of the Athletics’ offense. They may have improved heavily since last year, but they still rank 25th in the majors in run scoring and 23rd in scoring in the first inning. Quintana hasn’t been setting the world on fire, but does have a respectable 4.10 ERA. He has sputtered a bit here in August, but had a 2.05 ERA in the month of July. Playing the Atheltics should help him return to something resembling that form.
The Mets are a much better offense on the year – in fact, they rank in the top ten of run scoring. However, they have been far worse in the first inning. They score just 0.38 first inning runs per game, which puts them behind the Athletics at 26th in the majors. Mitch Spense should be able to deal with that early on for us. He’s held his opponents to two or less earned runs in each of the last four games (22.2 innings pitched).
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 15: No (-120)
Minnesota Twins vs. Texas Rangers
First Pitch – 8:05 pm EST
Globe Life Field – Arlington, Texas
Broadcast – FS1
Minnesota is another top 10 offense that we’re going to roll the dice with on an NRFI. They, like the Mets, are also a bit worse in the first inning – albeit the dropoff isn’t nearly as drastic. The major reason I think they can be held in the first is Corey Bradford. His last start against the 2nd-ranked Yankees offense was inspiring. He went five innings and allowed just one run while striking out seven. If he can navigate his way through that lineup, he should be just fine at home on Thursday.
We end this NRFI with Texas, who is in the bottom third of the league when it comes to scoring runs at home. Facing Bailey Ober won’t make that an easier task. He has allowed just two earned runs in his last three starts. That includes a 7.0-inning scoreless performance against the Guardians last time out. This Twins offense shouldn’t give him any issues, particularly early on in the game.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 15: No (-125)
