The Deputy Communications Manager of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Sheikh Tophic, has disagreed with the assertion by the prominent Executive Chairman of McDan Group of Companies, Daniel McKorley, that the Ghana Premier League is a “gambling” league.
McKorley, often credited for a number of developmental sporting projects, stated in an interview on Asempa FM that there is too much gambling in the top-flight division in Ghana.
“I can sponsor the Ghana Premier League, but the gambling is too much,” he said.
“First of all, Mr. McKorley spoke with a very clean heart. For somebody to comment about something wrong with the product means it bothers him because, first of all, if you don’t follow the product, you wouldn’t know what is going on. What it means is that he does not follow our league,” he added.
According to Sheikh, the business mogul is merely acting on what he listens to and watches in the media, despite being a board member of Accra Great Olympics.
He also confidently said that McKorley would not be able to mention a single club involved in gambling even if he had a gun pointed to his head.
“He follows football as a fan. In fact, he is a board member of Great Olympics, and he pumps a lot of money into the team. So when he says this, it means that he only listens to what is said in the media. Even if you put a pistol to his head to mention which teams have been involved in betting, he would not be able to,” Sheikh said.
The GFA Deputy Communications Manager therefore cautioned media practitioners to promote the league positively to change the negative narratives and also advised Daniel McKorley to join in effecting a change in the GPL.
