Lee Brass plant closes leaving many without jobs

ANNISTON, Ala. (WBRC) – More than 150 people in Calhoun County are finding themselves without jobs this week. That’s after a company that’s been around for more than a century closed unexpectedly.

Don Hopper with Calhoun County Economic Development says there was no reason given for the closure, and he says the employees didn’t seem to get much help.

Employees at the Lee Brass plant were informed Tuesday the plant would not be reopening for business and to collect their belongings.

Don Hopper with the Calhoun County Economic Development says he was surprised by the closure of the plant. Hopper says helping those who lost their jobs is his number one priority.

“The way we look at that is for everybody that’s lost a job, their unemployment rate has gone to 100%. We want to make sure we find a way to help those employees find gainful employment,” said Hopper.

“The good thing is we got companies that need people and so we’re hoping that those skills the folks bring from the Lee Brass facility will transfer to some of these other companies or foundries. We know the skills we have at Lee Brass and those people are anxious to talk to them,” said Hopper.

There will be a job fair for those unemployed workers on Tuesday, August 20 at the Oxford Civic Center.
