The Little League World Series transitioned to 20 teams in 2022, with 10 each in the U.S. and international tournaments. Now that every team has played one game, the lower bracket is set to commence.

The lower brackets feature elimination games, while teams that have won remain in the upper bracket. Teams in the upper bracket won’t face elimination from championship contention until the tournament finals on August 24.

The winner of the U.S. tournament will face the winner of the international tournament for the LLWS championship on August 25.

This means that the eight teams in action on Saturday still have a chance to win it all out of the lower bracket—something Eastbank Little League of Louisiana did in 2019—but it’s win-or-go-home time.

The first game of the day will pit Whalley Little League of Canada against Radames López Little League of Puerto Rico. Both teams were blanked in their opening games, but it’s hard to take away a ton from those performances.

Canada and Puerto Rico played Taiwan and Japan, respectively, and those are looking like two of the most dominant squads in this entire tournament. Taiwan (Kuei-Shan Little League), recorded another blowout victory on Friday, routing Australia 11-0.

There’s a very good chance that either Canada or Puerto Rico will play its way back into contention. The winner will face Mexico on Sunday.

The second game will feature Sioux Falls Little League of South Dakota against South Shore Little League of New York. Sioux Falls could be a team to watch in the U.S. lower bracket, as it came excruciatingly close to knocking off Florida

Sioux Falls held a 1-0 lead at the top of the fifth inning before Lake Mary Little League battled back and took the lead on Luis Calo’s sacrifice fly.

The winner of the New York and South Dakota matchup will face Illinois on Sunday.

Aruba Central Little League will face South Czech Republic Little League in Saturday’s third game, and both teams had fairly decent showings in their opening games.

Aruba was shut out by the team from Mexico but only allowed two runs, while the Czech Republic team lost a 4-1 tilt against Cuba. The winner of that matchup will face Australia on Sunday.

Saturday’s nightcap will feature Council Rock Newtown Little League of Pennsylvania and Salem Little League of New Hampshire. The Pennsylvania team lost a lopsided 9-0 game against Boerne Little League of Texas on Thursday, while New Hampshire lost a tighter 3-1 game against Central East Maui Little League of Hawai’i on Wednesday.

East Maui Little League picked up its second win of the tournament on Friday, beating Hinsdale Little League of Illinois 5-0.

Washington will face either Pennsylvania or New Hampshire on Sunday afternoon.
