Entertainment critic Derek Sante checks out Alien: Romulus, Sing Sing & My Penguin Friend
LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — In theaters comes the return of sci-fi and suspense with Alien: Romulus. This new foray into the Alien universe places the Xenomorphs and face huggers front and center when a group of young space colonizers stumble upon an abandoned space station. Looking to steal for their future, they unwittingly unleash almost certain death. Timeline-wise, this film takes place between the first Alien and the second Aliens film. Making many connections for hardcore fans, this story also creates a new link for those slinking in late to the party. I give it an A for being what every other horror or suspense movie is trying to be this year.
Also in theaters comes a film based on the true life of men trying to find art behind bars; it’s called Sing Sing. Starring Colman Domingo and Clarence Maclin, the story follows a man looking to survive in a maximum city prison in upstate New York, known as Sing Sing. A theater group made up of prisoners looks to create musicals and shows to help them escape solitude and time. Grade: B+
Lastly, and also in theaters, comes a film that’s cute and based on a true story; it’s called My Penguin Friend. Starring Jean Reno as an angry and broken fisherman who comes across a drifting penguin. Nursing it to health and making a connection, he finds new life with his little swimming friend. Grade: B-
