MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 19
Minnesota Twins vs. San Diego Padres
First Pitch – 9:40 pm EST
Petco Park – San Diego, California
Broadcast – FS1
For out first NRFI Monday, we’re heading out to the West coast. The Padres look to keep the Twins at bay for us in the top of the first, which is a big ask. The Twins rank in the top ten of runs score – although it is worth noting that they are middle of the pack in scoring in the first inning. Michael King should be the guy to slow them down for a bit. He’s coming off 7.0 shutout innings against the Pirates. He’s only allowed seven total runs over his last five games. Additionally, his stikeout numbers are trending up. I’ll trust him even against one of the better offenses.
In the bottom of the inning, there’s another solid hitting team. The Padres are just outside of the top 10 in terms of runs score – currently ranked 11th. However, they face tough rookie Zebby Matthews. Just one start into his career, I’m already high on the righty. Not only did he hold an 8th ranked Royals offense to just two runs in 5.0 innings, but his accuracy is out of this world. He walked none in that game, which is right on par with what we saw from him in the minors. I look for him to build on that performance and nail down this NRFI.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 19: No (TBD)
Seattle Mariners vs. Los Angeles Dodgers
First Pitch – 10:10 pm EST
Dodger Stadium – Los Angeles, California
Broadcast – MLB TV
I may just keep riding the Mariners in these NRFI spots. As long as they continue to have solid starters (as they do today), I trust just about any pitcher to keep them at bay. They still rank 27th in runs scored this year and dead last in both strikeouts and batting average. Gavin Stone should be good enough to deal with them. He held the Brewers to just one run in his last outing. This is a far worse lineup and he only needs three outs for our purpose.
In the bottom half, we’re siding with Bryan Woo over the tough Dodgers lineup. He carries a 2.06 ERA into Monday’s action and would be looking at award votes if he managed to stay healthy. He has allowed just three runs in his last four games, which includes shutouts of the Phillies and the Tigers. This Dodgers team is tough, but Woo has stood up to every test so far. I like him to give us another right here.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 19: No (TBD)
