‘Boy Meets World’ star reveals cancer diagnosis

Danielle Fishel, who starred as Topanga Lawrence on 1990s teen sitcom “Boy Meets World,” says she was recently diagnosed with breast cancer.

Fishel, 43, revealed the news in Monday’s podcast episode of “Pod Meets World,” which she co-hosts alongside former “Boy Meets World” stars Will Friedle and Rider Strong.

“I was recently diagnosed with DCIS, which stands for ductal carcinoma in situ, which is a form of breast cancer,” Fishel said. “It is very, very, very early. It’s technically stage zero.

“I’m going to be fine. I’m having surgery to remove it. I’m going to be on some follow up treatment,” she added.

DCIS is a noninvasive cancer, meaning it isn’t aggressive and typically doesn’t spread, and is highly treatable, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

Fishel said she was grateful to have caught her cancer diagnosis so early in the process. She credits a recent text message reminder about her annual mammogram appointment, which she says she scheduled the same day.

“The fact that I am good about going to my doctor’s appointments … they found it so, so early that I’m going to be fine,” Fishel said. “I want to share this because I hope it will encourage anyone to get in there; if it’s time for your appointment or you’ve never had an appointment before, get in there. If you have to find out that you have cancer, find out when it’s at stage zero, if possible.”
