Meanwhile, contemporary brands such as The Frankie Shop and Dôen have offered their own takes, with the latter’s £428 Pascual jacket already sold out, with a waiting list for all sizes in its straw colourway, and for everything but the XXL in dark olive. Described on its website as “reminiscent of a vintage style worn by Margaret and Katherine’s [the founders] father in Santa Barbara,” they recommend wearing it with “a buttery bias-cut slip skirt and light cashmere layers,” as a perfect way to juxtapose the workwear and feminine details. 

Stylist Florrie Thomas is a new adopter of the look, recently discovering a great navy style on ASOS, which she’s worn throughout the summer when the weather is having an off-day. “When The Row, Jonathan Anderson or Miuccia Prada talk, people listen,” says Thomas. “It’s another slightly preppy, classic piece that’s having a moment. It’s an evolution of the canvas worker jacket, too, that’s super-easy to wear transeasonally, if this is a word! There is also a heritage feel to some of the more waxy versions – a reworking of a classic Barbour almost – and contemporary designers love to look to British heritage for inspiration.”
