Nascar goes commercial-free on NBC Sports at select races – BlackBook Motorsport

  • NBC will only use side-by-side breaks during racing action
  • Leigh Diffey to be lead play-by-play commentator from this weekend

NBC Sports has revealed it will show uninterrupted lights-to-flag coverage of three upcoming Nascar Cup Series races.

‘Nascar Nonstop’ will show races at Daytona, Atlanta, and Talladega on NBC and USA Network this season.

The channel will only use side-by-side breaks during the racing action, pivoting away from the traditional ad-filled coverage that is common in the US.

“We always strive to deliver the best broadcast for the Nascar viewers at home,” said Jeff Behnke, NBC Sports’ vice president of motorsports production.

“NBC Sports’ ‘Nascar Nonstop’ gives the fans what they want for these pivotal races at Daytona, Atlanta and Talladega – live coverage of every green flag lap of superspeedway racing.”

This is the latest broadcast innovation from the channel, as it also introduced ‘Radio Style’ broadcasts at races such as Watkins Glen and Chicago where the commentators were situated at various points around the circuit.

NBC Sports will likely look to commercialise its ad-free coverage, similar to how it does with other sports, such as golf. Its coverage of the Solheim Cup last year, for example, had an ad-free hour sponsored by KPMG.

In other news, NBC Sports revealed that legendary commentator Leigh Diffey will serve as the lead Nascar Cup Series play-by-play voice from this weekend, having worked as IndyCar’s lead commentator for over a decade.
