Prisma Health opens .3M adaptive sports, wellness center in Unity Park

Prisma Health Roger C. Peace Adaptive Sports and Wellness Center is now open in Unity Park.

The new $2.3 million facility aims to reduce the inequalities and barriers to fitness for individuals with chronic conditions or disabilities. Adaptive sports and wellness programs are available at the center including adaptive cycling on the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new 9,000-square-foot facility at 159 Wellborn St. was held Aug. 22. The Roger C. Peace Rehabilitation Hospital partnered with NOTUS Sports to build the new center.

“Our goal is to provide more access – whether through special equipment, expertise or the activities themselves. By modifying traditional sports, we can create inclusive environments where everyone can participate and thrive,” said Elizabeth DuBose, associate administrator at RCP.

Adaptive sports have been shown to have a significant impact on the lives of patients. For example, Preston King said adaptive yoga has helped his mental clarity, resiliency and positivity. For two years, he has been taking classes with RCP since his right lower leg was amputated.

“I think (adaptive yoga) is very unique in a lot of ways,” King said. “Everyone is – maybe as opposed to a normal class – doing something slightly different. I mean I might have my leg off doing a child’s pose.”

Physical, occupational and recreational outpatient therapy will be provided at the center using innovative rehabilitation technologies. In addition, peer support and community outreach/education programs will be available for patients.

Prisma Health also plans to use the facility as a hub for its cancer wellness and prevention programs. These include cancer survivorship and prevention classes, support group meetings and more.

The center was funded almost entirely by community support including a $750,000 grant from the Greenville Health Authority. Rion Smith, board chairman for the Prisma Health Upstate Foundation, said they are grateful for the organizations, foundations and individuals who made the project possible.
