MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 24

Detroit Tigers vs. Chicago White Sox

First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Guaranteed Rate Field – Chicago, Illinois
Broadcast – ESPN+

The top of the first inning is the real sweat here. With that being said, it shouldn’t be much of one. Despite being the far better hitting team, the Tigers are just 23rd in the league in run scoring. They’re also a bottom third team when it comes to scoring in the first inning. They’ll face a rookie with just three starts on his career – Ky Bush. The big lefty has been solid, particularly in his last start. He went 6.0 innings and allowed just one run while striking out five Astros. If he brings that stuff to the Tigers, he should have an easy first inning at the very least.

There’s not much to breakdown in the bottom of the first. The White Sox are an awful hitting team. They average just 3.10 runs per games over the season, which puts them dead last – over half a run behind anyone else. They’re also dead last in scoring in the first inning. Now they’ll get presumed AL Cy Young winner, Tarik Skubal (currently betting off at -1600 for the award). This should be a huge stat padding game for him and we shouldn’t have to worry about any early run scoring.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 24: No (-140)

Washington Nationals vs. Atlanta Braves

First Pitch – 7:20 pm EST
Truist Park – Atlanta, Georgia
Broadcast – MLB TV

We unsuccessfully reccomended this game on Friday as a possible NRFI. However, the frustrating thing was that MacKenzie Gore allowed a leadoff solo home run to Michael Harris and then never gave up another run over 6.0 innings. The Braves offense, outside of that early home run, was again bad. They’ve totaled just 14 runs over their last five games (2.8 runs per game), and have somehow managed to win four of those. Jake Irvin should have what it takes to keep them quiet. He’s been decent all year with a 3.81 ERA over 151.0 innings pitched.

The other half of this NRFI relies on the elder statesmen of the Braves pitching staff, Charlie Morton. Although his ERA is a bit higher than it’s been in past years, he’s looked sharp in his last two outings. He has allowed just three combined runs in those outings in 11.1 innings. His strikeout numbers have looked up as well – fanning 15 guys over that span. The Nationals are also the 27th best team at scoring in the first, which should help Morton out here.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 24: No (-120)
