One man died after an overnight shooting near a business in Kansas City’s Midtown Westport neighborhood, police said.

Officers responded just before 3:30 a.m. Saturday to a reported shooting at West 39th and Central streets. They found a man with a gunshot wound and paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Officers found another man and a woman who also suffered gunshot wounds. They were transported to a hospital with non life-threatening injuries, according to Sgt. Phil DiMartino, a spokesperson with Kansas City police.

A group of people were gathered outside a business when shots were fired and the three victims were struck by bullets, DiMartino said. The shooting is being investigated as a homicide.

Police have not yet released the identity of the victim.

Detectives were canvassing the area looking for witnesses and video surveillance Saturday. Investigators were working to gather physical evidence at the scene.

The killing is Kansas City’s 98th homicide this year, according to data tracked by The Star. At this time last year, there were 133 killings.

No other information was immediately available Saturday.
