Travelers bound for Hawaii have been urged to reconsider their travel plans due to the arrival of tropical storm Hone. Hawaiian Airlines has started issuing travel waivers for affected travelers, with options to delay travel until next week for no penalty or receive a credit for the value of the trip.


Passengers to Hilo and Kona are encouraged to defer travel plans

Travelers flying to or from Hilo (ITO) and Kona (KOA) with Hawaiian Airlines, with bookings on August 24 and 25, have been allowed to reschedule flights to alternative dates without incurring additional fees. However, new travel arrangements must be completed by August 29. Any travel outside this window may not qualify for the waiver.

Passengers rebooking itineraries will be able to do so at no extra charge; however, they must remain in the same cabin class and travel the same route. Those who wish to cancel their travel plans can hold the original ticket’s value in credit, which must be redeemed within a year from the original purchase date. This option will not incur change fees, but travelers may be required to pay a fare difference when making a new booking. Flight delays and cancellations are expected

Hawaiian Airlines has advised passengers to expect delays and cancellations of scheduled services over the next few days as Tropical Cyclone Hone sets course for the Carrier. The carrier has encouraged travelers with bookings in the coming days to postpone trips to another date and stay home and safe. Deteriorating weather conditions are also set to challenge driving traffic conditions.

Air Canada , which serves Honolulu directly from Vancouver International Airport (YVR) year-round onboard its Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, has also issued a travel alert for passengers traveling on August 25 and 26; the airline has noted that their operations to Hawaii may be affected by the tropical storm, and has enabled passengers to change their travel dates, without penalty for Sunday, and Monday. The Canadian flag carrier currently has these flights scheduled; and are currently still expected to operate as planned, according to Flightradar24:

Southwest Airlines is another carrier that has increased flexibility for passengers in light of Hone, with those holding reservations via the below ports able to rebook within 14 days with no penalty:

  • Hilo – Hawaii Island, HI (ITO)
  • Honolulu – Oahu, HI (HNL)
  • Kahului – Maui, HI (OGG)
  • Kona – Hawaii Island, HI (KOA)
  • Lihue – Kauai, HI (LIH)
