MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 25
St. Louis Cardinals vs. Minnesota Twins
First Pitch – 2:10 pm EST
Target Field – Minneapolis, Minnesota
Broadcast – MLB TV
We’ve seen just two starts from Zebby Matthews going into Sunday’s action. However, he’s faced a couple of tough offenses in that time. Both Kansas City and San Diego rank in the top ten in run scoring, but were held to just two earned runs by the young righty. St. Louis has been far worse than those two teams so far. They rank 24th in offense and haven’t scored in the first inning in the last three games. Matthews should be poised to get this NRFI started right.
The larger part of this NRFI sweat should come in the bottom of the inning. The Twins are 6th ranked in scoring – although that number drops to 12th when we just look at the first inning. Regardless, they are difficult to put down in order early. However, I’m going to put my trust in Erick Fedde. He’s been up and down since being traded to the Cardinals, but is coming off a promising start against their divisional rivals last time out. He threw 5.2 against the Brewers and only allowed two runs. If that version of him is on the bump Sunday, he should finish this NRFI for us.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 25: No (-115)
Washington Nationals vs. Atlanta Braves
First Pitch – 12:05 pm EST
Truist Park – Atlanta, Georgia
Broadcast – Roku
I keep going back to Braves games lately and the reason is simple – they have some of the best rotation pieces and simply can’t hit recently.
Sunday is no different as Reyaldo Lopez makes his second start after a prolonged IL stint. While his injury would worry anyone looking for an NRFI here, consider his first start back. He went 5.0 innings and struck out ten en route to a win over the Phillies. That lowered his ERA to 2.05, which would have him in Cy Young discussions if he had enough innings. With the Nationals ranking 27th in first inning runs, I don’t think there’s all too much to worry about here.
In the bottom of the inning, we’ll see the aforementioned bats of the Braves. They have won five of the last six games and only managed to score 18 runs in that span (3.0 per game). Outside of a leadoff home run from Michael Harris in game one of this series, they haven’t really even threatened much early in those games. Their Sunday afternoon game opponent is DJ Herz, who has been six straight starts without allowing more than two runs. So I expect him to keep this slow streak going for the Braves.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 25: No (-120)
