Orange Lutheran girls flag football captures Chargers Invitational in dominant fashion

Orange Lutheran’s girls flag football team completed a dominant run at the Chargers Invitational on Saturday in Costa Mesa.

The Lancers defeated Classical Academy of Escondido 40-14 in the championship game to capture the early-season tournament.

Behind sophomore quarterback Makena Cook, Orange Lutheran beat Huntington Beach 37-14 in the semifinals and Newport Harbor 28-12 in the quarterfinals.

On Friday, the Lancers defeated Corona del Mar 43-6 and San Juan Hills 26-7.

Orange Lutheran (7-0) entered the tournament ranked No. 2 in Orange County to Newport Harbor.

The Lancers’ roster also includes: Josie Anderson, Keylee Baker, Capriana Cuneo, Ruby Fuamatu, Mia Gonzalez, Ava Harrison, Addison Hendrix, Alyssa McClure, Catherine Medvitz, Miranda Malo Juvuera Mendoza, Maddison Milne, Julia Oberholtzer, Anna Paquette, Isabelle Thomas, Brookelyn Vanderkallen, Aubrey Velarde, Kaylie Whitsell and Laina Yasumura.

Kristen Sherman is the team’s coach.

Classical Academy, the Division II champion last season in San Diego, beat Long Beach Poly 41-37 in the other semifinal.

Last season, Orange Lutheran lost in overtime to Esperanza 28-27 in the finals of the Chargers’ tournament.
