Extreme temperatures create challenges for after school sports and activities

QUAD CITIES, (KWQC) – With the hot weather conditions, a lot of attention goes towards students athletes and keeping them safe at practice and games.

Davenport and Bettendorf community school districts follow guidelines from the IHSAA while the Rock Island-Milan and Moline-Coal Valley school districts follow IHSA heat policy guidelines.

Both the IHSAA AND THE IHSA use WGBT guidance, which stands for Wet Globe Thermometer. This measures heat stress in direct sunlight, taking into account temperature, humidity, sun angle, wind speed, and cloud cover.

It’s used when it’s 80 degrees or high and it can be used indoors or outdoors.

If it’s over 90 degrees no competition will be held and practices will be canceled or postponed to early mornings or indoors with AC.

Events that were affected by the heat today include:

• Rock Island High School postponed golf and cross country meets.
• Rock Island boys JV soccer canceled and boys varsity moved to 6 p.m.
• Moline canceled all sporting events and moved all practices indoors.
• Davenport middle schools canceled all sporting events and high school practices were either postponed or moved indoors. That’s the same with Bettendorf.
