2 men targeted by robbers at Fashion Island in Newport Beach

Newport Beach police were investigating a robbery with at least one shot fired at Fashion Island on Monday night, Aug. 26, authorities said.

Officers were called to the 100 block of Newport Center Drive just before 11:30 p.m. on a report of a robbery with possible gunshots and found two victims, one of whom suffered an injury to his ear “possibly from shattered glass from a gunshot at the vehicle,” police Sgt. Steve Oberon said.

The suspects were described as three males wearing ski masks who fled in a medium sized sedan, Oberon said. Their approximate ages were not known.

The robberies occurred near the Bloomingdale’s store at Fashion Island, with witnesses telling police that the suspects approached a man in a Rolls Royce SUV and stole his watch and wallet, NBC 4 reported.

The driver of a Ferrari managed to drive away as the suspects attempted to carjack him, with one of them firing at least one shot and shattering one of the car’s windows, the station reported. The victim drove to a gas station and called police.

Last month, a tourist from New Zealand – 68-year-old Patricia McKay – was killed during an attempted robbery in which three men tried to steal her husband’s watch before turning their attention to her, dragging McKay into the parking lot where she was run over by a getaway car driven by another suspect.

The three men were caught later that same day and have been charged with her murder.
