School warns of high school sports live-streaming scam

JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) – A fake social media profile is pretending to livestream high school volleyball games in exchange for your personal information.

Jonesboro Hurricane Athletics is warning everyone that a Facebook account posing as the Arkansas Activities Association scams locals out of their money.

With only two followers, the fake account remains active as of Tuesday, Aug. 27.

The imposter account shared links that claimed to livestream volleyball games for several schools including Brookland, Jonesboro, and Cave City. However, once payment is entered, there is no game to watch.

Jonesboro Athletic Director Trey Harding said it is a major red flag if a site requests your credit card information. He recommends calling your school to verify before purchasing anything.

“Most schools aren’t charging for live-streamed games,” Harding said. “Ask to speak with the Athletic Department and find out before you give out any information.”

Harding is discussing the problem with other athletic directors, as online scams have affected schools in previous years. He said to report all imposter social media profiles for now.

“I mean you pretty much have to spend the whole day blocking all of the accounts and trying to get the word out,” Harding said.

The real AAA Facebook page has 35,000 followers and can be found here.

Harding said all Jonesboro sports are live-streamed only on YouTube from the profile @JHSTheWarning.
