Map shows world by population density

Parts of Asia and various small island nations are among the most densely populated countries in the world, according to data from the World Bank.

The findings, mapped by Newsweek, show that while many countries with large populations also have densely packed populations, there are many smaller areas that have extremely dense populations due to their size.

The most densely populated region in the world in Macau, an administrative region near the south coast of China. It is home to 710,000 people in an area of just over 30 square kilometers.

Other small urban regions, like Monaco, Singapore and Vatican City, also ranked highly in population density. While these areas all have populations of less than 10 million combined, those populations are contained in tiny spaces- in the Vatican’s case, it’s a space smaller than one square kilometer.

The country with the highest population density that also has a population larger than ten million is Rwanda, which has a population of around 14 million and an area of 26,000 square kilometers, meaning its population density is 1,496 people per square mile.

Lebanon, the Philippines, and South Korea were also highly ranked, with population densities of over 1,000 people per square mile. The U.S. was ranked as the 210th most densely populated area, with a density of 37 people per square mile.

The least densely populated country in the world is Greenland, which has a population of just 55,000 people split across more than two million square kilometers of land. The Falkland Islands, with a population of 3,400, was the second least densely populated area.

Australia, which has a population of over 20 million, and Russia, which has a population of around 144 million, both also ranked low in population density, due to large regions of uninhabited land outside of their urban centers.

Considering Russia has the ninth highest population in the world, it is the area on this map with the largest gap between its population ranking and its population density ranking.

India and China, which when combined account for almost 3 billion people, were less high on the list, despite having the two largest populations in the world and a high frequency of prominent urban areas. India ranked as the 28th most densely populated area, while China ranked as the 79th, below Indonesia, Italy, and North Korea.

The U.K. ranked 46th, with a population of 70 million on an island of just under 243,000 square kilometers.
