LaToya Cantrell names Master P New Orleans ‘entertainment ambassador’ for Super Bowl LIX
With the Super Bowl set to arrive in New Orleans next year, Mayor LaToya Cantrell has named Percy “Master P” Miller as her new “entertainment ambassador,” enlisting the rap mogul from city’s Calliope projects to help promote New Orleans culture before a global audience.
During a news conference Friday in Gallier Hall with Master P standing by the mayor’s side, Cantrell and her staff offered few details about the new position and declined to answer questions after the announcement.
But the mayor said Miller’s job would essentially be to promote New Orleans art and culture to an audience beyond the Crescent City in the coming months, a role that sounded like it could try to approximate Snoop Dogg’s successful run during the Paris Olympics as a superfan of Team USA.
Miller was born in New Orleans. His No Limit record label, fueled by Miller’s relentless work ethic and marketing savvy, released a series of albums in the 1990s that generated millions in revenue and established New Orleans as a hip-hop powerhouse. Miller has returned to New Orleans regularly for community initiatives and to celebrate his birthday with concerts at the Smoothie King Center.
On Friday, he said he was grateful for the chance to work with city officials to uplift other New Orleans-born artists.
“I was able to grow up in the projects and change my life,” he said in an announcement with Cantrell. “I want more for the city of New Orleans.”
Cantrell called Miller a true “son of New Orleans.”
“He’s deserving of all the love, all the praise, for demonstrating the resiliency of this community and that there’s no limit to accomplishing great things for the city of New Orleans,” Cantrell said.
