AAA says Labor Day travel is up 9% in North Dakota and across the country

BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) – Many Americans will be traveling for the Labor Day weekend, including many here in North Dakota.

AAA Public Affairs Regional Director Skyler McKinley says it’s a really interesting year as Labor Day travel is up 9% across the country and in North Dakota. He said Labor Day is traditionally not a huge travel holiday because kids are going back to school, the days are getting shorter, and the weather is about to turn. But, he said this year, the weather in the Midwest has been fairly cooperative, and as a result, they are seeing people getting out for this last hurrah.

“I think what’s interesting about Labor Day is, it is not a ‘pack up the car and drive to Disneyland’ type of holiday. Very much, we see folks sticking closer to home, getting into the great outdoors, seeing loved ones who might be a couple hours away,” said McKinley.

Mckinley said Thursday and Friday are usually the worst times on the road, especially in the evening heading out. He said heading back on Labor Day, you can avoid the worst of traffic if you set out early in the morning.
