CHOP doctor stresses importance of gradual return to school sports

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — School is back in session and so are youth sports.

Studies show almost one-third of all injuries incurred in childhood are sports-related. The most common are sprains and strains.

Doctors at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia say they still see anything from concussions to overuse injuries, like stress fractures.

Dr. Michael Beasley, a pediatric sports medicine specialist, says it’s important to have a gradual return to an active fall from a low-key summer.

Stretching before sports and other activities warms your muscles up, and stretching after a practice helps build strength and endurance, Beasley adds.

It’s also important to avoid unhealthy comparisons between other student-athletes.

Beasley says rest days are just as important in making sure student-athletes hit peak performance.
