Pixel 9a To Reportedly Feature The Tensor G4, But It Will Use An Inferior Packaging Technology To Help Google Save Up On Costs, Along With An Older Modem

Google’s next midranger, the Pixel 9a, is slated to launch next year, but the leaks have already started pouring through. The first one allegedly showcased the first glimpse of the handset, sporting a significantly different design than the company’s current-generation flagship, and now, we have learned that this particular smartphone will also be equipped with the Tensor G4 like its more expensive cousins. The only difference is that, according to the latest report, the chipset will tout an inferior packaging technology than the one Google used for the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL, likely to save up on component costs and price the Pixel 9a more competitively.

The Tensor G3 also had two variants, which just goes to show that this is not the first time that Google has pulled this trick. According to Android Authority, the upcoming Pixel 9a’s Tensor G4 will use Samsung’s IPoP, or Integrated Package on Package, making it inferior to the FOPLP, or Fan-Out Panel Level Packaging used for the other version. In short, IPoP will make the Tensor G4 run hotter while sporting a thicker die size, with the only advantage for Google being that it is cheaper to mass produce.

While we should not expect some major performance differences between the Pixel 9a and Google’s Pixel 9 family, do note that the difference in packaging technologies means that the Tensor G4 could quickly reach its thermal limitations quicker, leaving tons of performance on the table. Another area where Google is expected to cut costs is in the modem side of things, with the Pixel 9a said to be treated to the Exynos 5300 instead of the Exynos 5400. This difference pretty much means that the affordable handset will lose out on satellite connectivity, and it will run hotter.

Whatever Google is planning to launch next year, it better have a robust cooling solution prepared for the Pixel 9a. During the advertising giant’s Pixel 9 announcement, an executive stated that except for the base model, every other device has been treated to a vapor chamber, allowing the Tensor G4 and the rest of the components to run cooler. This revelation does not give us much hope for the Pixel 9a, but let us keep our fingers crossed and see what else the company has in mind.
