Reason behind Shop ‘n Save grocery store disappearance
A POPULAR bargain retailer with more than 70 outlets is set to pull the shutters down in May 2024.
Shop ‘n Save has announced it is closing down its location in Lawrenceville Shopping Center, Pittsburgh, after six years.
Why is Shop ‘n Save closing?
A spokesperson for the company has revealed that the lease between the landlord and the retailer had come to an end.
Employees at the branch have been encouraged to search for new jobs at other locations nearby.
Lori Moran, the vice president of Ballmoney Real Estate Services, the company that owns the Lawrenceville Shopping Center, confirmed the closure.
In a statement, she said: “The Lawrenceville Shopping Center will continue to serve the many retail and service needs of Lawrenceville and surrounding communities and, with the subdivision of the Shop ‘n Save space, will add more jobs and another 21,000 square feet (as yet undetermined) retail user to the current mix, which includes fitness, veterinary, salon, staffing and variety stores.”
She added: “The current owner of the Shop’n Save has been a terrific operator since taking over in 2018.
“And would have continued to serve our neighborhood for many years to come.”
When is Shop ‘n Save closing?
Shop ‘n Save will leave the Lawrenceville Shopping Center on May 13, 2024.
Some loyal customers took to Facebook to mourn the loss of the grocer.
One person said: “”They closing that down damn it’s been there forever.”
Another one added: “I used to live down there and that was my favorite store when they first opened.”
A third wrote: “I’m more upset because I use that pharmacy. Even if the store does become an Aldi, the ease of getting my prescription close is definitely going to be missed.”
Which grocery store is replacing Shop ‘n Save?
The discount grocery store is set to be replaced by another supermarket chain, Aldi.
It is still unknown when the new store will welcome its customers after Shop ‘n Save leaves the site in May.
Moran added that it is a “dynamic opportunity” for a new grocer who will take the 21,000 square feet space.
He described it as a “win/win situation for everyone involved, including the neighborhood”.
Aldi already has four stores across Pittsburgh, with 156 across Pennsylvania.
