The Fashion Industry Comes Together to Promote Voter Registration

Early this morning, over 1,000 members of the fashion industry—including models, designers, editors, retailers, influencers, and our own team members here at Harper’s Bazaar—came together for a march throughout New York City to promote voter registration ahead of Election Day on Tuesday, November 5.

Cosponsored by the Council of Fashion Designers of America and Vogue, the nonpartisan event was scheduled on the first day of New York Fashion Week to demonstrate industry members’ commitment to promoting voting, championing democracy, and advocating for positive change. The event was also timely, in that National Voter Registration Day takes place Tuesday, September 17.

Starting around 8:00 a.m., marchers gathered in Herald Square wearing white T-shirts designed by Zac Posen for Old Navy, which read “Fashion for Our Future” on the front and “Vote” on the back. At 9:00 a.m., the sea of people began following a path to Bryant Park, where they were led in chants encouraging people to vote. Throughout the march, volunteers also moved throughout the crowd with clipboards, ensuring that participants were registered at their current address.

At the final destination, the event concluded with special remarks from First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, CFDA chairman Thom Browne, and activist and fashion designer Aurora James.

“Fashion has always been our future,” Biden said in her speech. “This much is clear: You walk the walk. And you’ve always done it together. And that’s what we have to do again this fall. Vote.”

In his speech, Browne added, “We are reminded that fashion is not just about what we wear—it’s a powerful voice and platform for what we stand for.”

And James said: “[Elections] are about opportunities to exercise democracy, to actually help shape and empower the people, the ideas, and the policies that empower all people, not just some people.”
