US Open men’s finals live updates: Taylor Fritz takes on Jannik Sinner for the title at the final Grand Slam of the year

Taylor Fritz is looking to add his name to a very short list of Americans who’ve captured a Grand Slam title in the 21st century. Andre Agassi (2001, 2003 Australian Open), Pete Sampras (2002 US Open) and Andy Roddick (2003 US Open) are the only American men to win singles majors since the turn of the century and standing in Fritz’s way in the finals of the 2024 US Open is the No. 1 player in the world, Jannik Sinner.

While Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic may get more headlines, Sinner has more than held his own this, with five wins this season including the Australian Open and the Cincinnati Open leading into the US Open. Sinner knocked out Jack Draper in straight sets in the semifinals to advance and Fritz took out fellow American Frances Tiafoe on his way to the finals. With the win, Sinner would become the first Italian man to win two Grand Slams in one year.

  • Sinner holds serve, takes 2-1 lead

    Fritz has played his way back and the crowd is picking up with him. However, Sinner’s forehand appears to be gaining strength and tying up Fritz, who’s having difficulty returning. He holds serve for a 2-1 lead.

  • Fritz holds serve, evens it up

    Fritz regaining a foothold after Sinner was pulling away. He looked frustrated at the end of the first set and the crowd hasn’t had much reason to cheer him on. But he’s showing life again, holding serve to even it up at 1-1.

  • Sinner takes first set, 6-3

    Momentum has definitely shifted with Sinner now sending Fritz chasing shot after shot along the baseline. That opens Sinner up for a hard forehand, which Fritz returns long.

  • Sinner back in control

    After breaking serve, Sinner appears to have taken back control of this set. He holds serve and goes on top 5-3. Fritz is playing catch-up now.

  • Sinner takes 4-3 lead

    Sinner stops Fritz’s momentum, breaking his serve on a surprising drop shot. The two had been going back and forth on long rallies, returning forehand after forehand, then Sinner caught Fritz off guard with that shot. Nice change of pace that may have turned this set.

  • Sinner holds serve

    Fritz returns a strong Sinner forehand into the net, stopping his momentum. Sinner holds serve and we’re now 3-3.

  • Fritz is sending Sinner all over the court after the Italian initially controlled the set. But the American has won three straight points as Sinner goes to serve.

  • Fritz holds serve after long rally

    Sinner and Fritz putting on a show with a long rally, volleying multiple shots (23!) back and forth. But again, Fritz’s long reach saves him and allows him to fire a shot out of Sinner’s reach.

    He’s up 3-2.

  • Fritz breaks serve to make it 2-2

    Fritz reached far to his left to get a hard return from Sinner, and his volley was out of reach for the Italian. We’re at 2-2 in the first set as Fritz goes to serve.

    Both Sinner and Fritz are so long and lanky, seemingly nothing is out of reach from side to side.

    But Sinner is more assertive with his shots thus far, not missing his opportunities. Fritz can’t afford to make many mistakes against him.

    Sinner breaks Fritz’s serve after a long rally. He handled Fritz’s serve well, possibly even surprising the American with his return on a 120 mph ball.

  • Taylor Fritz first American player in US Open men’s final since 2009

    Andy Roddick has been a popular trivia answer at the US Open this weekend. Prior to Taylor Fritz on Sunday, he was the last American to play in the men’s final, losing to Roger Federer in 2006.

    If Fritz wins, he’ll become the first American to win a Grand Slam title since 2003 when Roddick defeated Spain’s Juan Carlos Ferrero.
