Weekly Wildcats Sports Wrap-up for Sept. 9

FOOTBALL

Warwick varsity football opened their season with a win over Staten Island’s Wagner High School of the New York City PSAL. The visiting Wildcats opened a 27-0 lead before allowing a late touchdown on the turf on Sept. 7, for a 27-8 win. A total team effort and contributions from all 55 varsity players was the key to victory.

The offense was paced by quarterback Brody Frederick, who completed 5 of 7 passes for 122 yards, including a 44-yard TD pass to returning all-league senior wide receiver Dylan Sullivan. Ryan Sullivan caught two passes for 52 yards to set up the first rushing touchdown by junior running back Aaron Callender.

The offensive line played an important role in the win, led by seniors Michael Miller, Matt Lupkovich, Michael Hennessy and Grant Havell.  Sophomore Brayden Harrison has taken on a big role as center and senior TE Wyatt Vreeland is one of the league’s top returners. 

Warwick’s defense was paced by Havell with six tackles, four assists and one sack, outside linebacker Colton Senius (seven tackles and two assists) and defensive back Logan Conley (six tackles and three pass break-ups.  Luca Siebert intercepted a ball from his safety position and returned it 30 yards.  Defensive linemen Anthony Roe, Tom Ronan, Rahied Richardson III and Michael Miller were key to solid defensive line play.

Transfer junior Giacomo Abbate returned the opening second half kick-off 84 yards to build a 20-0 lead, and place kicker Cole Haskew was 3-4 on extra points.

The Warwick Wildcats will take on Class AA defending Section IX Champion Middletown in a non-league home game Friday, September 13, at C. Ashley Morgan Field. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. on the Annual Youth Football and Cheer Night, which will feature a youth football and cheer exhibition at halftime. Go Wildcats!

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

On Saturday Sept. 7, Warwick Valley hosted the 48-team, 1,400-runner Wave Mania Invitational at Sanfordville Elementary School.  The boys were led by top freshman in the state Leo Shostal with a fifth-place finish in the Varsity I race. Leo completed the 3.09-mile course in 16 minutes, 16.9 seconds.

 Leo’s teammates of RJ Dovico (20^th, in 17:46.7), AJ Kobrick (27^th in 18:16.2) , Collin Freet (36^th in 18:26.5) and Jake Cosco (42^nd in 18:33.5) helped round out the scoring with a tremendous fifth- place finish in the 24 team event.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

In the Wave Mania Girls Varsity II race, Senior captain Alyssa Dovico and sophomore Julia Schlesinger both earned medals. Alyssa finished sixth in 19:56.8 and Julia was 20^th in 21:16.7. The Wildcats finished seventh as a team with 141 points.

The girls team unofficially kicked off their season at the 33rd Annual Warwick Lions Club 5K on Sept. 2.  Alyssa Dovico was the second overall finisher in the women’s division 5-mile race, crossing the line in 34:57.  Madison Olszewski, Trixie Wendell, Julia Schlesinger, Johanna Beauchamp, Juliette Cloutier and Juliet Novak finished 1-6 in the 11-15 year old division of the race.

GIRLS TENNIS

The girls varsity tennis team opened their season on Sept. 4, at Pine Bush with a 6-1 victory.  Bianka Grzesik, Piper Stewen, and Keri Leahey secured wins in singles competition. The doubles teams of Gisela Gujar/Annika Brezina, Celia Greco/Leah Scalo, and Nina Cirillo/Rosalie Mountford also scored wins with dominant performances.

GIRLS SOCCER

Kelsey Larney, Molly Duffy and Kaitlyn Larney scored for Warwick in a season-opening 3-1 victory over Pine Bush on Sept. 5. Goalie Alexa Pitiger had four stops.

BOYS SOCCER

Warwick fell to Monroe 3-2 on Sept. 4. The Wildcats battled back to tie the game at 1-1 and 2-2 before surrendering an own goal off a deflection. Symon Roldan and Joel Andoh both scored for Warwick. Eric Bethmann assisted on Andoh’s goal.

The Wildcats lost in their second game 6-2 to Washingtonville on Sept. 6. Joel Andoh scored twice in the losing effort and now has three goals in two games. Warwick hopes to bounce back vs Minisink and Monticello this coming week.

VOLLEYBALL
