Orange County Boys & Girls Clubs announce Eddy Award recipients
Boys & Girls Clubs in Orange County are celebrating their leaders with this year’s Eddy Awards. Named in honor of Boys Club alumnus Ed Arnold and his significant contributions to the community, the awards recognize exemplary board members from each of the 14 Boys & Girls Club organizations in Orange County.
The individuals are celebrated for their exceptional service, unwavering commitment to community betterment, and a passionate dedication to enhancing the lives of young people.
Among the winners is Katie Shreve, who was honored by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Capistrano Valley. Shreve has been an integral member of the BGCCV for more than a decade. In collaboration with her late husband, William Shreve, she has made philanthropic contributions exceeding $100,000.
Since her affiliation with the BGCCV, Katie Shreve has played a pivotal role in orchestrating the success of the silent and live auctions of the club’s gala. She has invested considerable time and effort in procuring numerous gifts annually. Notably, she contributes her award-winning cookies to the auctions, generating enthusiastic bidding wars from attendees.
Ever ready to assist, Shreve consistently supports the club with a positive demeanor, offering valuable insights and suggestions for process enhancement.
Adding to her extensive list of achievements with the BGCCV, for many years she also volunteered her time and talents as a Youth of the Year judge, demonstrating her dedication to the organization. Finally, by popular request of her fellow board members, she graciously shares her cookies at every meeting.
OC high school students win college culinary scholarships
Teens from Orange County School of the Arts and Fullerton Union High School won culinary college scholarships at the California Restaurant Foundation’s 2024 ProStart Cup presented by Wienerschnitzel, a high-stakes culinary arts and restaurant entrepreneurship competition.
The competition in Long Beach hosted more than 250 high school students from across the Golden State as they prepared three-course meals and pitched innovative restaurant concept ideas to a panel of restaurant and food industry professionals.
Orange County School of the Arts took home the top spot in the Management Competition for its college sports-themed restaurant concept serving breakfast all day. Fullerton Union High took second in the Management Competition.
In the Culinary Competition, Orange County School of the Arts won second, almost making it a clean sweep for the Santa Ana high school.
The students were awarded a variety of scholarships from colleges across the nation, and OCSA’s Management team will represent California in the National ProStart Student Invitational in Baltimore, Maryland, this spring.
