Express to close over 100 fashion stores across U.S.

American fashion retailer Express Inc. on Monday filed for bankruptcy and said it plans to close more than 100 store locations across the U.S.

Express, headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, filed its Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. The retailer, whose portfolio also includes Bonobos and UpWest Express, will close about 95 of its 530 Express stores and all 10 of its UpWest Express stores in the U.S., according to a news release. The company didn’t immediately specify which Express stores would be closing.

Store closing sales will begin Tuesday.

“Express has a strong portfolio of brands and a premier omnichannel platform. Our top priority remains providing our customers with the contemporary styles and value they expect from us,” Express CEO Steward Glendinning said in the release. “We thank our associates for their continued hard work and commitment, and we appreciate the ongoing support of our vendors, suppliers and business partners.”

Express ran at an operating loss of $28.7 million in its most recent third quarter 2023 earnings release.
