Her beige cashmere and pearly silk blouses and white satin pants signify a certain level of je ne sais quoi wealth. “The more cream colors she could wear, the more complicated it is to stay clean. And that’s a way to show how you don’t have to care about whether you get spots on your clothes or whatever,” costume designer Signe Sejlund, who also dressed Kidman for HBO’s The Undoing, told WWD.

Amelia doesn’t hide her non-Waspy upbringing—nor does she crave the Winburys’ approval the way Abby does. And her wardrobe reflects that. Take, for instance, her rehearsal dinner dress: it’s cherry red, not Nantucket red. And in another flashback scene at the beginning of episode 3, she stands out again in a maxi that is bright turquoise, rather than a pale sea blue that would have fit in better with this crowd.

Beneath Abby’s veneer of insufferable snobbery (“The Beresford is only going to hold the apartment until the end of the month, I need to get into that building”) lies a deep desperation for acceptance. She wants to prove that she belongs in the Winburys’ world. And most of all, she wants Greer to like her, which, in Abby’s mind, is cosplaying the perfect daughter-in-law via a wardrobe of flowing, floral, and excessively girly dresses.
