TUPPER LAKE — The Tupper Lake football team used a big second quarter en route to a 28-16 victory over the Bishop Grimes Cobras in the team’s season opener on the road Saturday.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Lumberjacks scored 22 points in the second and led 22-8 at halftime. The team scored six points in the final quarter, and the Cobras added eight.
“I was impressed by how we continued to play well throughout the extreme heat of the day,” Tupper Lake head coach Dennis Klossner said. “It was nice to see players step up and fill in as their opportunity arose.”
The Lumberjacks’ Brayden Shannon paved the way with a rushing touchdown and a 28-yard fumble recovery score. Quarterback Wyatt Godin completed one passing touchdown and scored once on the ground. Tupper Lake had 285 yards of offense.
“I am very proud of our offensive and defensive linemen as they lead the way for our backs and linebackers,” Klossner said. “Congrats to our linemen Bauer Callaghan, Jesse Dattola, Cooper Cuttaia, CJ Levey, Cristian Moody-Bell and Brenden Arsenault. Working hard in the trenches allowed us to rush for 169 yards and pass for 116 yards.”
On the defensive side of the ball, Karter Kenniston had a team-high 12 tackles, while Luke Robillard had 10 and Kyler McClain had nine. Kenniston, Robillard, Shannon, CJ Levey and Garrett Pelkey each had on sack.
“We have many little things to work on for next week,” Klossner said.
The Lumberjacks are slated to host Notre Dame of Utica at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
