Groundbreaking ceremony celebrates Downtown Entertainment and Events Plaza
CARBONDALE, Ill. (KFVS) – A groundbreaking ceremony will celebrate the new Downtown Entertainment and Events Plaza.
The city of Carbondale invited the public to the ceremony on Saturday, September 28 at 3 p.m.
They say the event will kick off the 3rd Annual Hemp, Hops and Shrooms Festival.
According to a news release from the city, the plaza project will support Carbondale’s local music scene and connect local artists and performers to the national entertainment industry.
Once finished, they say it will become a venue for many events, including concerts, comedy nights, plays, school performances, private gatherings and more.
The project was made possible by a $2 million grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity’s Rebuild Downtowns and Main Streets program.
Phase 1 of the plaza will include a permanent stage and a large lawn that will allow Carbondale to host entertainment and performing arts events. It will also allow them to expand the “Off the Rails” concert series.
