Hundreds get active for Topeka Public School’s 14th annual Family Fitness Fun Night

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Topeka Public School’s 14th annual Family Fitness Fun Night was a success Wednesday evening drawing in hundreds of families to Hummer Sports Park.

“It ends up bringing a lot of schools and they end up bringing in a piece of equipment or activity that they enjoy the most in their school,” says Troy St. Clair, Emcee and Consulting PE Teacher for USD-501.

Local organizations set up booths with free resources on nutrition, fitness, and mental health.

“The hope is just to bring the community together, let them see what their kids are doing in school and what they get to look forward to as they advance through. Maybe even providing services that they didn’t even know were available to them, so getting not only our community out here but getting our providers out to the community,” says St. Clair.

There were also special performances by the Topeka West Cheer Squad, Topeka High Drumline and the Highland Park Dance Team.

“We’re really excited to perform and show off what we can do just to show off that we like to dance and we like to stay fit,” says Joneice Hokanson-Bell, a Sophomore at Highland Park High School.

“It feels amazing to see people out here, that we have support in Topeka,” says Aden Bugg, Junior at Topeka West High School.

Attendees like Raylee and Carter Decker say they want to see more events like this in Topeka.

“Yes, absolutely. It’s really fun and it helps kids get their energy up get their heart rate up and get their blood vessels through,” says attendee, Carter Decker.

“I think that if you stay active on a good timeline and you have a good workout routine going I think you will be really healthy and you would be happy,” says attendee, Raylee Decker.

“I really appreciate people coming out here and actually talk about the wellness and the importance of fitness especially because the obesity rate in America is very high so seeing people come out here and care about fitness is actually amazing,” says Brielle Belshe, Senior at Topeka West High school.
