Field Hockey Earns Tie Following Strong Road Performance

The Nantucket field hockey team is now 4-1-1 through their first six games of the season following a 2-2 tie on the road against the Nauset Warriors Wednesday afternoon. The Whaler goals were scored by senior Suz Peraner and junior Sadie Paterson.

“We played well, particularly offensively after on Saturday where we won 1-0 (against Marshfield) but we felt like we were a little bottled up,” head coach Dan Weber said. “The girls did a really good job of spreading the field and looked really, really strong offensively. We controlled a lot of the game. It was a good performance with lots of positives. You always want to win, but I think that on the road with all the games we’ve been playing on the road, against good teams, we’ll take a tie with a good performance like that.”

Peraner’s goal was on a back post tap in thanks to a great pass from junior Carley Ray. Paterson’s goal came after junior Marin Mooney shot a ball from 20-25 yards out towards the goal that Paterson was able to tip in from two yards out past the Warrior’s goalie.

“It was a great goal,” Weber said of Paterson’s tally. “The goalie had no time to react because Sadie was so close to the net.”

Weber said all in all, he is happy with where his team is at through six games. They haven’t played a home game since their home opener on September 4 against Dennis-Yarmouth (2-1 win) but it hasn’t stopped them from enjoying a strong start.

“I can’t complain I mean, we haven’t played a home game since the first game the season. We’ve beaten a handful of really good teams,” Weber said. “If you had asked me at the beginning of the season after six games and only one at home how I’d feel about being 4-1-1, I would have probably signed up for it right there.

“And I think it’s a good thing, but it feels like we could be even better,” Weber added. “Yes we are 4-1-1 and we’re playing really well, but I still think there’s another level for this group to get to. I think we’re close to it. We’ll just keep chugging along and play the next game on the schedule and see if we can go out and win that one.”

Nantucket’s next game is scheduled for Saturday, September 21 at home against the Whitman-Hanson Panthers, who the Whalers beat on the road 3-0 on September 7.

Volleyball Loses To Barnstable

The Nantucket volleyball team welcomed one of the state’s top programs to the island on Wednesday, the Barnstable Red Hawks, and lost 3-0. The loss extended the Whaler’s losing streak to five games, but head coach Makaila Lyons said after the match she feels like there were some positives to take out of this game.

“Energy was up. Energy was up,” Lyons said. “We had set a different goal, other than win because obviously winning would be great, but we set a goal which was to have less unforced errors than we did in our last match. I haven’t done the math yet but overall though, I feel like they looked good. As much as these scores showed a big differential, I felt like we were right there. I felt like we were right there with them. I know they were riding that energy too.”

The sets were as followed.

Set One: 12-25 Barnstable

Set Two: 14-25 Barnstable

Set Three: 11-25 Barnstable

Lyons said she was impressed with the leadership of senior setter Bianca Santos and senior middle Leah Crowley throughout the match.

“She brought an energy to the court, especially in the last set, where she was rallying them,” Lyons said of Santos. “She was bringing her leadership and the energy that she needed to in that moment, and she picked that up, and she carried that. We needed that for sure.

“Also Leah Crowley, this was her first game serving this season and that was awesome,” Lyons added. “She was so awesome. Her first serve, the ball didn’t move. It didn’t shake.”

Nantucket will try to win their second match of the season on Monday, September 23 when they travel to Nauset to face the Warriors at 4 p.m.
