New study shows boxing more effective than walking for reducing belly fat

CINCINNATI (WKRC) — New research indicates that weight around the waist may be particularly harmful to heart health. A recent study compared two different types of workouts to determine which was more effective in reducing abdominal obesity.

Researchers examined the effects of brisk walking and a 12-week boxing course, similar to the one taught by James Wilson at the TriHealth Fitness and Health Pavilion in Montgomery.

“Fitness and boxing are making a comeback because it’s fun and exciting,” said Wilson, a personal trainer and fitness coach. “People want to go out and hit stuff. I know people get into their traditional fitness routines, but it’s good to mix it up sometimes.”

At the end of the study, researchers found that participants in the boxing group experienced positive changes in several areas, including body mass index, body fat percentage, and waist circumference. These reductions were not observed in the walking group.

“My shoulders, my wrists, abs—because you are twisting a lot and you’re moving a lot,” said Cherise Wilson, a boxing participant, describing the physical benefits she noticed.

Wilson explained why boxing might be more effective against waist weight. “There’s a lot of upper body strength involved, but there’s a lot of cardio as well. I like to include exercises that help with agility, core stability, and everything you need for that functional movement in everyday life,” he said.
