Nevada sees rise in unemployment, while some cities add jobs

Nevada saw a statewide increase of 700 non-farm jobs in the month of August, but the state still saw a small increase of the unemployment rate.

According to the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation’s August 2024 economic report, the unemployment rate rose to 5.5%, a rise of 0.1%.

Employment in Nevada’s three major metropolitan areas increased:

Las Vegas employment increased by 4,100 jobs since July, an increase of 40,200 jobs since August 2023.

Reno employment saw an increase of 600 jobs since July, an increase of 5,300 jobs since August 2023.

Carson City employment had an increase of 100 jobs since July, an increase of 500 jobs since August 2023.

“This month’s report points to slight cooling in Nevada’s labor market. Unemployment rose slightly, while annual job growth slid to 3.0%, said David Schmidt, Chief Economist with Nevada DETR.

Schmidt continued, “Job growth in mining, construction, manufacturing and logistics continues to outpace other industries, while health care employment saw declines over the month.”
