Forbes names 4 Western NC companies among best employers in 2024: Check out the NC list

A recent Forbes list of the best employers in the nation included several from North Carolina – and for good reason.

Market research firm Statista collaborated with Forbes to compile the list of 1,294 organizations, surveying more than 160,000 employees at U.S. companies for information on each. Companies with at least 500 employees were eligible, with over three years of survey data entered into a scoring system. Greater weight was given to the more recent data and responses from current employees in the state.

While not every employer included on the list is headquartered in N.C., each of them were rated highly through employee surveys. Here’s which companies made it onto the list.

Best employers in NC

The top 10 employers in N.C. according to the Forbes study:

  1. Duke Energy – 27,000 employees headquartered in Charlotte.
  2. Hilton Worldwide Holdings – 178,000 employees headquartered in McLean, Virginia.
  3. Apple – 161,000 employees headquartered in Cupertino, California.
  4. Microsoft – 221,000 employees headquartered in Redmond, Washington.
  5. Western Carolina University – 1,598 employees headquartered in Cullowhee.
  6. Ferguson Enterprises – 35,000 employees headquartered in Newport News, Virginia.
  7. Edward Jones – 50,000 employees headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri.
  8. Verizon Communications – 93,806 employees headquartered in New York, New York.
  9. PNC Financial Services – 56,411 employees headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
  10. Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina – 5,001 employees headquartered in Durham.

Best employers in Western NC

Among the full list of best N.C. employers, the following are located in WNC:

  • No. 5. Western Carolina University – 1,598 employees, headquartered in Cullowhee.
  • No. 48. Appalachian State University – 3,718 employees, headquartered in Boone.
  • No. 81. Buncombe County Schools – 3,500 employees, headquartered in Asheville.
  • No. 85. Ingles Markets – 27,000 employees, headquartered in Asheville.
