Bobcats rip into Riverhawks
The Marshalltown boys’ golf team appears to be getting right at the right time.
The Bobcats shot a season-best round to defeat Mason City in an Iowa Alliance Conference dual on Tuesday at Elmwood Country Club, routing the Riverhawks 306-338.
After consecutive meets shooting their previous season-best score of 312, the Bobcats marched all over Mason City thanks to a consistent level of scoring.
MHS freshman Joe Greazel delivered the medalist round with his 4-over-par 74, highlighted by a 1-under 34 on the front nine.
“Joe Greazel had a hot putter on the front nine to give him an early lead,” said MHS head coach Lucas Johnson. “He had a few more bogeys than he’d like on the back, but did well to avoid any big numbers and hang on down the stretch.”
Bobcat senior Ty Faltys was just one stroke back as the meet’s runner-up, rolling in a 1-under 34 on the back nine to score silver with his 75. Faltys birdied Nos. 11, 12 and 13 before a triple-bogey on the par-4 14th stole it all back.
“Ty Faltys wasn’t happy after his front nine, but his putter caught fire on the back and he had that phenomenal run on 11-13 to get back in medalist contention,” Johnson said. “He’s looking at a 31 or 32 on the way in if not for the out-of-bounds tee ball on 14.”
Seniors Eli Polley and Adam Boone shot 78 and 79, respectively, to round out Marshalltown’s victorious team total.
“Eli Polley and Adam Boone were paired together and I thought they did a nice job picking each other up and playing team golf,” Johnson said. “It was great to see Adam roll in a 7-footer on 18 to break 80 for the first time in his high school career.”
Sophomores Parker Christen (92) and Jacob Seberger (100) also competed for the Bobcats, who play a third meet in as many days with Wednesday’s Southeast Polk Invitational at Copper Creek Golf Club in Pleasant Hill.
“We’re going to need four guys in the 70s to get where we want to be by the end of the year,” Johnson said. “The guys at the varsity level have all proven they have the ability when they stay patient and play smart.”
