No. 17 Tigers to Host UTSA, Travel to South Florida – University of Memphis Athletics

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The No. 17 Memphis women’s soccer team will scratch two more games off their conference catalog this week, playing host to UTSA on Thursday night at 7 p.m. before traveling to South Florida for a noon kick-off on Sunday. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.

The Tigers (5-1-1, 0-0-1 AAC) played their first conference game to a draw at UAB last Thursday, with both squads keeping clean sheets. It will mark just the third time this season that Memphis will play two games in a week.

Game One: UTSA

The Roadrunners (6-3-1, 1-1 AAC) come to town following a road win at East Carolina last Sunday, beating the Pirates, 2-0. UTSA took home both Offensive (Tyler Coker) and Defensive (Sasjah Dade) Player of the Week awards from the AAC for their performances.

Addy Johnson leads the Roadrunners with 3 goals, but nine different players have found the back of the net for the Tigers’ opposition. Goalkeeper Jasmine Kessler has logged four shutouts and conceded seven goals in 10 games in goal.

A second-year member of the AAC following departure from Conference USA, UTSA’s first-ever clash with the Tigers came in 2023, a 1-0 road victory for Memphis. Saorla Miller scored the only goal late in the first half as the Tigers – then ranked No. 12 in the country – extended their winning streak to five games.

Game Two: South Florida

Memphis will head to Tampa to take on a South Florida (6-1-2, 1-0-1 AAC) team with whom they share plenty of postseason history. In 2018, Memphis defeated the hosting Bulls, 3-0, in the AAC Tournament final to take home their first championship in the conference. The next season, South Florida defeated the Tigers in the same final, 2-1. The teams clashed again in the 2021 final with Memphis winning on penalty kicks. All in all, the last seven AAC Championships have been won by Memphis (four) or South Florida (three).

Memphis’ all-time record against South Florida is 7-15-1. Although they have beaten the Bulls in tournament games in Tampa, their only true road victory over USF came in 2019 as the No. 11 Tigers beat the No. 16 Bulls, 2-1.

This South Florida team drew with Charlotte and defeated Rice to open AAC play; they host Rice while the Tigers take on UTSA. They are led in attack by UTSA transfer Anna Sutter (five goals, two assists) and Georgia Brown (four goals, two assists).

Tiger Tidbits

  • The Memphis defense, which ranks sixth in the country with 5.0 shots per game allowed, will have its hands full with a USF attack that is ranked 15th in the country with 19.6 shots per game.

  • Goalkeeper Kaylie Bierman kept her 11th shutout of her Memphis career, moving her up to sixth in program history.
