Hurricane Helene to fill Georgia skies. Has air travel been hit? Here’s what we know
The incoming Hurricane Helene will fill the skies with thick clouds, wind, rain, and other severe elements. Is there space for airplanes?
Many areas of Georgia are already seeing dangerous weather conditions, which has led to some disruptions. According to data from FlightAware, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport has seen 364 delays Thursday and 185 cancelations as of 3:30 p.m. The airport posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) that it has a severe weather plan in preparation for the storm’s impact.
Augusta Regional Airport spokesperson Lauren Smith said Thursday morning that they have seen no major delays or cancelations. They do expect to see several diversions land in Augusta waiting out the weather in Atlanta.

Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport spokesperson Lori Lynah said midday Thursday that they have only had a couple of cancelations so far. She went on to say they may see more later in the evening, but it’s impossible to know at this point.
Any changes to flight schedules will come directly from the airlines, so travelers should stay tuned to their websites and consider downloading the app for whatever airline they are using. They will also want to make sure to arrive early.
According to the National Weather Service’s 1 p.m. report, Helene is a very large storm extending outward up to 60 miles and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 345 miles. After touching down in Florida Thursday evening, the worst of the storm is expected to travel along the westside of Georgia.
